Creating functional ceramic vessels is much like printmaking in the sense that the artist is reproducing variations on the same concept or design. Much like printmakers, the functional potter will produce ten to fifty to a hundred variations on the same form. When creating a series I like to incorporate a large amount of spontaneous gesture and surface into each work with alterations to the form and varying decorative surfaces. My intention is to keep the motion fresh with each form I make, while still creating a series that belongs together. Variation and experimentation are very important to me in my ceramic pursuit. Salt and wood atmosphere firing allows me to further incorporate these ideas into the final finish of my work.
